How Angels Inspire & Support Us.
About two months ago, I was reading that book by Ibn-Al-Quayyim (The Garden Of The Lovers -that I probably talked about way too much) and I fell in love with the title of one chapter:
"On how the world and the heavens were made out of love and for the purpose of love and that all the movements of the sun and the moon and the stars and the angels and the animals and the motion of every moving thing indeed exists because of love."
In the chapter he went on explaining how angels are the ones who are assigned with all the movements of the universe from clouds to wind and recording people`s deeds.
And that their main motive to excecute all God`s will and commandements and to cause all that motion is their Love and adoration for their Lord.
He explained it with such insight and beauty and it made me realise how little I know about Angels although believing in them is one of the 6 pillars of muslim belief.
I found it trully inspiring and reminded me of how we forget that worshipping is nothing but the full version of love, its full capacity. And we tend to consider worship as this heavy and hard to excecute duty. While it all comes down to love.
And with this misconception of worship we feel as if whenever we`re praying or fasting or doing any deed that God told us to do, we feel as if we`re doing God a favor while first and foremost we are doing ourselves a favor and then we should be worshipping God for what He is.
Because He, before everything else, deserves to be worshipped. Angels, due to their deep understanding and sensing of who God is and His magnificence, and due to the absence of their free will, they excecute their Lord`s commandments with their full capacity, they use all that energy and power that god granted them with for that sole purpose.
“The heaven creaks and it has every right to creak. There is no place that could contain four fingers in the heavens except that there is an Angel standing, bowing, or prostrating to Allah therein.”
~ Prophet Muhammet PBUH.
And on the day of judgment, after they have spent their life that expands from the time God created them -before Humans- to the final Day, this is what they say to God:
"Exalted are you oh our Lord, we have not worshipped you the way you should be worshipped!"
Of course we won`t be able to worship God the same way angels do, because of all the desires we were created with that are a challenging distraction, but the point here is how angels inspire us to sense how deserving and worthy of worship God is.
And how directing our energy, and our desires, in the right way that God taught us is the right way to go about that worshipping.
Also, angels are assigned to accompany us from birth to the after-life.
1. They record our deeds:
Two angels are assigned to write every single movement and word we do, one writes the good and the other writes the bad.
“Whoever intended to do a good deed, but did not do it, it is written for him as a complete good deed. If he actually performed the good deed then it is written as ten good deeds, or up to seven hundred times or more.
If a person intended to do an evil deed, but did not do it, it is written as a good deed, while if he entertained the thought and acted on it, it is written as a single evil deed.”
Hadith of Prophet Muhammet PBUH
2. They protect us from evil: (Guardian Angels)
“For each (person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of God.” (Quran 13:10)
There are angels whom God has appointed to guard humans from in front and from behind. When the decree of Allah comes – when He decrees that some accident or calamity should befall him – the angels withdraw from him.
A man said to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): “A group from (the tribe of) Murad wanted to kill you.” ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “With every man there are two angels who protect him from everything that is not decreed; when the decree comes, they withdraw and do not stand between him and it. A man's decreed lifespan is his protection.”
3. They encourage us to do good:
We also have an angel who encourages our good thoughts and invites us to do good and be good just like we have a jinn who keeps whispering evil thoughts and intentions. The more good we do, the more we listen to the angel, the more surrounded and supported we are by angels. Because they are known to pray for the one who invests her/his energy for God`s sake.
'When a person enters his bed (to sleep), an angel and a devil surround him. The devil whispers 'Your awakening will end in evil' and the angel says 'ends in good.' But if one sleeps after engaging in remembrance of Allah (The Exalted) the angels will protect him throughout the night.'
This is but a glimpse inside the fascinating world of angels that are one of God`s most noble and huge creatures who use all that power to serve us and please God`s will only because He is worth all the worship.
